Effect of phytohaemagglutinin extract on growth, digestibility of nitrogen and activity of invertase and of Na+, K+-ATPase in the intestinal mucosa of rats

For 21 days 3 groups of 6 male rats were given to appetite or pair-fed on diets equivalent in nitrogen and based on wheat meal and casein without or with phytohaemagglutinin (PHG) from raw kidney beans, 1% of DM replacing some of the casein. With PHG there was a decrease in feed intake. Weight gain decreased by 36%, independently of appetite loss, DM intake by 7.5% and N intake by 14%. In blood glucose decreased significantly but the haematocrit was unchanged.
