In pot trials in which seedlings of (a) couch and (b) perennial ryegrass were grown in fertile soil to which 0, 10 or 30 meq N/pot was applied every 3 wk, (b) showed much stronger tillering, and shoot and root DM contents after 3, 6, 9 or 13 wk were greater than in (a), but due to rhizome formation at the 1st 2 harvests, (b) had higher belowground DM production than (a). At the high fertility level, (b) showed higher growth rates and dry wt. than (a).
