Increasing rates of sludge increased the yield of grass, mainly due to the N-content, and decreased the quantity of drainage water. The fertilizer effect of the compost was weak. Very little nitrate (ca. 1 kg N/ha) was leached from lysimeters with a plant cover. Large amounts of nitrate (100 to 200 kg N/ha) were leached from bare lysimeters however. In all of the treatments less phosphate (0.3-0.5 kg P/ha) was leached than was supplied by precipitations (0.6 kg P/ha).
