In field trials in 5 yr, rice was given 0, 4 or 6 t barley or rice straw with 70 or 85 kg each of N,P205 and K2O/ha. In the 1st yr, increase in plant ht. and tiller number was decreased by straw, but in the following yr the decrease was less marked and was reduced by increasing the rate of NPK. Yield decreases due to straw were observed in only a few cases while yields increased by >5% in some plots including those with 6 t barley straw, after the 2nd yr.
