Lucerne grown on (a) a silty clay loam (Neubois series) and (b) a clay soil (Saint-Urban) received 0-60 kg N/ha as ammonium nitrate before sowing and in the following spring. Up to 40 kg N/ha applied before sowing significantly increased yield on (a) but not (b). Spring N applications gave insignificant yield increases at both sites.
