Estimating the number of flowers of buds of some grapevine cultivars

The bud fertility (expressed as number of flowers) of suckers was found to be significantly lower than that of shoots on the same grapevine but suckers could nevertheless be used to replace normal shoots during pruning. Numbers of flowers/cm of 11 cvs, and the average fertility of shoot and sucker buds on cvs Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Ugni Blanc are tabulated.
