Feeding value of sunflower meal as a replacement for soybean meal in lactating cows

Feeding value of sunflower meal as a replacement for soybean meal in lactating cows

Journal of the College of Dairying 8(2): 275-284

The feeding values of sunflower meal (SEM) were compared with soybean meal (SBM) when a high concentrate ration was given to lactating cows. Lactation and digestion trials were studied in 6 Holstein cows used in a 3 .times. 3 Latin square design. The dietary treatments were (control) basal concentrate supplemented with 20% SBM, supplemented with 15% SBM plus 5% SFM and supplemented with 10% SBM plus 10% SFM. Milk yield and composition were not significantly affected by the rations but the milk yield tended to increase in cows fed with the SFM rations. Digestibilities of dry matter, crude protein and crude fiber from cows fed with the SFM rations were slightly, but not significantly, lower than from cows fed with the SBM ration. Efficiency of N utilization was lower in cows fed with the SFM rations than those fed with the SBM ration but the differences were not significant. There appears to be no difference between SBM and SFM when they are supplied at a rate of 10% of the concentrate and when this concentrate comprised 37% of the total ration.
