Chrysanthemum seedlings, from 6 progeny at the 3-4 true leaf stage, grown for 25 weeks at 17 deg C under short days (8 h) and irradiances of 30 W/m2 flowered earlier than those grown under similar conditions but at irradiances of 10 or 15 W/m2. Within different irradiances larger plants flowered earlier than smaller ones, and the number of non-flowering plants increased with lower irradiances and were more frequent in smaller sized plants.
