Fowl and turkey spermatozoan metabolism

Fowl and turkey spermatozoan metabolism

UK, Poultry Research Centre: Report for the year ended 31st March 1981: 11

The rate of oxygen uptake of fowl spermatozoa, when diluted in a buffer resembling seminal plasma in osmolarity, pH and salt content, was similar to that of turkey spermatozoa. However, fowl spermatozoa had much the greater capacity for anaerobic glycolysis. The oxidative/glycolytic ratio for ATP concentration was approx. 2 for fowl vs. >20 for turkey spermatozoa at physiological temps.
