In a greenhouse study, rice differing in alkali tolerance were grown in soils amended with Na2CO3 to give ESP values of (a) 3, (b) 14, (c) 25 and (d) 38. Growth in all was stimulated by (b), but (c) and (d) depressed growth in the order: IR26 (alkali-sensitive) > IR2058 > Pokkali (alkali-tolerant).
