In trials at IRRI, 10 rice with 1000-grain wt. ranging from 13.1 g in Bomdia to 46.2 g in Khao Luong showed a clear advantage of larger grain size on establishment and vigorous early seedling growth, measured in terms of seedling wt. up to 10 days from sowing. From 10 to 20 days from sowing, RGR differed little between cv.; the early advantage of IRRI was maintained during further growth through to grain filling and final grain yield.
