An attempt was made to identify rice that could withstand long duration in the seedbed without significant final yield loss. Of 9 differing in growth duration transplanted in the field at 60 days age, (a) BKN 6986-173-5 was the tallest followed by (b) IR5825-41-2-P2. In all cv., transplanted 60-day-old seedlings flowered earlier than 20-day-old seedlings; this was more marked in the early maturing IR36, IR38 and C4-63.
