Hormones and evolution. Vol. 2

Hormones and evolution. Vol. 2

Hormones and evolution Vol 2: xxv + 493-989 + Ii-Ixix

This book reviews recent advances in the understanding of polypeptide hormones in vertebrates. Consideration is given to the significance of neurosecretions, the evolution of hormones, their control and diversity throughout the body and the animal kingdom and their roles in viviparity and reproductive periodicity. Chapters include the following: Responses of vertebrates to neurohypophysial principles, by W. H. Sawyer & P. K. T. Pang (pp. 493-523, 112 ref.), dealing with the actions of vasopressin and oxytocin, including the milk-ejection response. Comparative biochemistry of pituitary growth hormone, prolactin and the glycoprotein hormones, by S. W. Farmer & H. Papkoff (pp. 525-559, 81 ref.), which compares mammalian and non-mammalian growth hormone, prolactin and gonadotrophins. Actions of prolactin among the invertebrates, by V. L. de Vlaming (pp. 561-642, 25pp. of ref.), considering actions of prolactin in reproduction, parental behaviour and osmoregulation, its influence on the adrenal, its cardiovascular, growth and metabolic actions, daily variation in responsiveness to prolactin, evolution of prolactin and comparison with growth hormone. The releasing factors of the hypothalamus, By I. M. D. Jackson (pp. 723-790, 19pp. of ref.), containing a section on prolactin-releasing and -inhibiting factors. Hormones and the evolution of viviparity, by E. C. Amoroso, R. B. Heap & M. B. Renfree (pp. 925-989, 14pp. of ref.), which includes a section concerning induction of parturition and lactogenesis.
