Since 1950 the total population of horses, donkeys and mules in France has fallen from 2.4 mill to 360 000. The numbers of heavy horses have fallen sharply, whilst thoroughbreds and ponies have increased. Horsemeat production as a proportion of total meat supply is also falling -- 18 900 t were produced in 1980, 0.6% of all meat produced in France. The majority of animals slaughtered for meat are younger than 18 months, principally coming from the races of heavy horses.
