This article discusses the future of horticulture under glass in the Netherlands, especially in relation to the energy situation. Details are given of the present situation: production in 1979, imports and exports. Increasing international competition makes the Dutch look towards energy-saving schemes to keep their good position in the market. Details are given of the type of energy used, price increases since 1973 and the expected cost of introducing energy-saving schemes.
