Nodules formed by Rhizobium spp. strains CB756 and 32H1 had uptake hydrogenase activity on Vigna unguiculata and V. mungo but not on V. radiata. Nodulation by strains with hydrogenase activity had no effect on soyabean growth up to 7 wk after sowing compared with strains without the enzyme activity. With subterranean clover the more effective the Rhizobium strain the more electrons were lost as H2.
