Host change, generation sequence and reproductive isolation of Ovatus crataegarius (Walker, 1850) and O. insitus (Walker, 1849)(Homoptera: Aphididae)

Host change, generation sequence and reproductive isolation of Ovatus crataegarius (Walker, 1850) and O. insitus (Walker, 1849)(Homoptera: Aphididae)

Deutsche Entomologische Zeitschrift 26(4/5): 241-253

Studies on Ovatus crataegarius (Wlk.) and O. insitus (Wlk.) were carried out near Rostock, German Democratic Republic. Although the species were morphologically indistinguishable as fundatrices and occurred together on Crataegus oxyacantha or medlar, they were found to be reproductively isolated. Differences in sex pheromone secretion were considered likely because the oviparous females of O. insitus had many more pseudosensoria on the hind tibiae than females of O. crataegarius.
