Host contact and initial development of the root parasite Hyobanche sanguinea L

Host contact and initial development of the root parasite Hyobanche sanguinea L

Abstracts, XIII International Botanical Congress, Sydney, Australia, August 1981: 56

Results of an anatomical study are reported. Hyobanche sanguinea germinates in response to a stimulant produced by the roots of the host plant, Metalasia muricata. The radicle emerges, attaches to the host root and is soon transformed into a callus-like tubercle tightly adpressed to the host root. Conducting elements are differentiated towards the periphery of the tubercle where centres of meristematic activity are formed.
