Host factors affecting nitrogen fixation in common bean

Populations of Phaseolus vulgaris were developed by a back-cross-selfing method using Pueblo 152B1, a type III (indeterminate prostrate) plant which has high N2 fixation, as the donor parent in crosses with five recurrent parents differing in plant type, N2 fixation and yield. Initial field trials of these parents and several standard cultivars, using an acetylene reduction assay, confirmed the high yield and N2 fixation potential of Puebla 152B1 and revealed variation within the other types.
