Host searching and oviposition behaviour of some parasitoids of aphidophagous Syrphidae

Host searching and oviposition behaviour of some parasitoids of aphidophagous Syrphidae

Ecological Entomology, 61: 79-87

An analysis of host searching behavior suggests that female parasitoids respond to aphid odors bringing them to the region of an aphid colony. Syrphid hosts are located within the aphid colony by response to contact chemicals on the larval integument. The behavioral mechanisms used by syrphid larvae to resist attacks, and the subsequent responses made by parasitoids are described. Oviposition behavior and host size preferences of parasitoids are described.
