Host specificty and suitability of Tephritis dilacerata (Dip.: Tephritidae): a candidate for the biological control of perennial sow-thistle (Sonchus arvensis) (Compositae) in Canada

Host specificty and suitability of Tephritis dilacerata (Dip.: Tephritidae): a candidate for the biological control of perennial sow-thistle (Sonchus arvensis) (Compositae) in Canada

Entomophaga 1980; 24(4): 455-461

The food-plant specificity and suitability of Tephritis dilacerata (Lw.), a promising biocontrol agent of perennial sowthistle (Sonchus arvensis), were investigated. This noxious weed, which spreads by horizontal roots and weeds, is widespread in Canada and the northern USA. T. dilacerata, a European species, produces galls in the seed-heads, reducing the numbers of seeds produced. A total of 47 plant species in 13 tribes of the family Compositae was tested.
