House and city planning in the ancient Negev and the Provincia Arabia

Housing in Arid Lands: 3-32

During the first century A. D., Rome brought the Negev and Provincia Arabia (Sinai, northern Arabia, Edom and Moab in Transjordan) into the empire. This necessitated occupying old Nabatean settlements and building new outposts to garrison troops along the trade route to Arabia. The Romans drew heavily on Nabatean achievements in finding solutions to the problems of heating and cooling in desert dwellings.
