Housing density of sheep in intensive commercial units

For 45 ewes with twin lambs, housed in lambing sheds with 1.4, 1.8 or 2.0 m2 floor area per animal, body weight of lambs averaged 6.6, 6.6 and 7.1 kg resp. at 10 days of age, and 14.6, 13.3 and 10.0 kg at weaning at 30 days. Preweaning mortality was 8, 17 and 17% in the 3 groups. For weaned lambs transferred into a fattening shed and penned at 0.5, 0.4 and 0.3 m2 floor area per lamb, body weight averaged 15.4, 14.9 and 15.5 kg resp. after transfer, and 21.1, 19.9 and 18.9 kg at 60 days of age.
