How do milking goats perform on cultivated grasses?

In feeding trials at Lusignan in 1976-8, chopping of forage reduced intake by milking goats by 15%. Intake of forage was hardly affected when daily supplementation with concentrates increased from 400 to 800 g/animal. Increasing forage DM from 16 to 18% had no effect on intake, but growth stage did. At the same growth stage, Italian ryegrass (daily intake 3.7 kg DM) was preferred to cocksfoot (2.9 kg) and tall fescue (2.7 kg).
