How is yield formation controlled in winter wheat?

The sequence of formation and reduction of tillers, ears, spikelets and grain in winter wheat is outlined and the possibilities for compensation between yield components are considered. In a trial at Hohenschulen in 1977, delaying sowing from 15 Sept. to 15 Nov. reduced the max. number of tillers/m2 from 1970 to 1313 where N was applied (a) at the beginning of growth in spring and from 1610 to 639 where it was applied (b) at shooting.
