How rising salt causes land loss

How rising salt causes land loss

Span 23(3): 139-140

Scrub clearance in Western Australia has lowered transpiration from the land surface and resulted in a penetration of rainwater in the soil to levels where the salt concentration is high. Although the amount of crop land lost in this way is small, it is sufficient to cause concern. It mostly occurs in the wheat belt. Research at Esperance has investigated how much land should be reforested to hold the water-table at a safe depth.
