How seedbed density can affect nursery stock costs

How seedbed density can affect nursery stock costs

Forestry Chronicle 57(6): 276-278

Black spruce seedlings were thinned in the 2nd growing season to low, medium and high density (16.4, 32.8, 65.6 trees/m of drill). Plants were lifted in the spring after the 3rd growing season and graded, mainly on the basis of acceptable root collar diam. (3.6-7.5 mm). Seedlings grown at low density had greater dry wt. (by 102%), root area index (97%), root collar diam. (36%) and ht. (3%) than high-density seedlings.
