How shade and fertilizer levels affect woody plant growth

Several ornamental shrubs were grown under fabric providing 25-73% shade or in full sun, with Osmocote 18-6-12 at low, medium or high rates, and the effects were assessed on top and root growth and plant quality. Juniperus, Pyracantha and Euonymus spp. grew best in full sun, at the highest fertilizer application rate. With Elaeagnus sp. root growth was greatest on plants grown in full sun, but top weight was little affected by different shade levels.
