How shearing affects Christmas tree quality

How shearing affects Christmas tree quality

Ohio Report on Research and Development 66(3): 37-40

Two-yr-old Scots and white pine seedlings (Pinus sylvestris and P. strobus) were planted in Ohio in 1973. Terminal shoots were cut annually from mid-June 1976 to 1980 to one of 6 lengths (4-14 inches) and lateral branches sheared to produce trees of even taper (ht./width ratio). After the 5th shearing tree ht. and visible defects were recorded.
