How to avoid mastitis

How to avoid mastitis

L' Elevage Bovin (119): 47-51

Studies have determined that mastitis occurs more frequently in housing where the cows are tethered and particularly if the floor is not straw covered. Rubber matting on the floor reduces the risks. Stalls should not be too long (<1.45 m for Friesian cows) as the animals are less likely to get dirty, and a width of 1.10 m is recommended, which allows the cows to lie down comfortably.
