How to obtain reliable yields of lucerne seed in the non-chernozem zone

Field trials in 1968-74 in the Chuvash ASSR, middle Volga River area, showed that lucerne seed yields varied considerably but were usually in the range 105-273 kg/ha in the 1st yr of utilization, 300-350 kg in the 2nd yr and 300-500 kg in the 3rd yr. In wet yr, highest yields were obtained in the 2nd yr and in dry yr in the 3rd and 4th yr. Lucerne in pure stands gave higher yields than when sown under annual fodder mixtures or cereals.
