Human babesiosis on Nantucket Island: prevalence of Babesia microti in ticks

Human babesiosis on Nantucket Island: prevalence of Babesia microti in ticks

American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene 29(5): 742-746

In order to derive direct evidence implicating Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman & Corwin as a vector of human babesiosis, the prevalence of Babesia microti infection in nymphs of I. dammini collected on Nantucket I., Massachusetts was determined. In the laboratory, nymphs remained attached to hamsters for about 3 days. Babesial infection was transmitted more often when attachment was for 54 h than when it lasted 36 or 48 h.
