Human health problems associated with the Okavango Delta

Human health problems associated with the Okavango Delta

Proceedings of the Symposium on the Okavango Delta and its future utilization, August 30 September 2nd 1976, National Museum, Gaborone, Botswana: ; 249-254

Health problems of the Okavango Delta, Botswana, are discussed and compared with those of the rest of the country. Malaria is the most important problem, the incidence in the Delta being the highest in the country. Examination of 496 blood films in 1975 revealed malarial parasites in 216 (43.5%). About 98% of cases are due to Plasmodium falciparum, the rest to P. malariae. Peak transmission occurs during March and April. Malaria control measures are outlined.
