Monocytes from uninfected or lightly Schistosoma mansoni-infected people killed 11 to 12% of schistosomula in pooled control plasma after 24 h. With heavily infected people however, killing was reduced to about 4%. Immune plasma increased the killing of schistosomula in all groups but with heavy infections killing remained depressed, suggesting a primary cellular defect. From hepatosplenic patients, monocytes showed poor killing rates (2.4%) in 5 and augmented rates (18.5%) in 6 others.
