Human plague in 1980

Weekly Epidemiological Record 56(35): 273-275

In 1980, 505 cases of plague (caused by Yersinia pestis) were reported in man, with 56 deaths. The cases occurring in Africa, the Americas and Asia are briefly discussed. More cases were reported in South America than in 1979 (142 as compared with 23), the increase being due to an outbreak in north-eastern Brazil and in Franz Tamayo Province, La Paz Department, Bolivia.
