It is reported that 13 cases of human plague (caused by Yersinia pestis) occurred in the USA in 1981, 4 of them fatal. In 5 of the cases, infection was by means of flea bites occurring in connection with epizootic plague among prairie dogs (Cynomys gunnisoni) and rock squirrels (Spermophilus variegatus).
