Human populations of the Andes: the human science basis for research planning

Human populations of the Andes: the human science basis for research planning

Mountain Research and Development 1(2): 145-170

The Andean mountain chain is the longest on earth, extending north-south from tropical to cold-temperate latitudes. This high land-mass has a great diversity of climatic, geomorphic, floral, and faunal elements on both macro- and micro-scales. By responding to opportunities offered by the various ecosystems, human populations have acquired a wealth of environmental knowledge and have developed an unusual complexity of adaptive mechanisms.
