Humic compounds in plant residues and in organic matter in various soils under evergreen oak

The humic substances extracted from the light fractions, the heavy fractions and humins separated from three soils under evergreen oak were compared with humic substances extracted from fallen oak leaves. Electrophoresis, gel filtration and infra-red spectroscopy revealed that the degree of polymerisation of humic acids was higher in the light fractions than in the leaf or in the more highly transformed heavy fractions, but was highest in the humin fraction.
