Humidity dependent viability of weird eggs in Tribolium castaneum

Humidity dependent viability of weird eggs in Tribolium castaneum

Journal of Heredity 71(2): 131-133

Details are given of further studies on an unusual egg phenotype (weird) in an experimental population of Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.). The unusual eggs were smooth and shiny and lacked the outermost (sticky) layer of the shell of normal eggs. At 50% RH, about 50% of the weird eggs hatched. Exposure to 35% RH resulted in almost total mortality. About 80% of the weird eggs hatched at 61 and 83% RH, as did normal eggs at all relative humidities between 35 and 83%.
