Humoral immunity in malnutrition

Humoral immunity in malnutrition

Federation Proceedings 39(13): 3093-3097

Malnutrition affects the humoral immune system in different ways. B lymphocyte subpopulations, serum IgG, IgM and IgA and immunoglobulin synthesis and metabolism are usually normal or increased. Hypogammaglobulinaemia may occur in very young, severely malnourished infants. Although usually normal, deficient antibody responses to injected antigens are occasionally present, depending on the severity of the malnutrition.
