Humus forms of forest soils

Humus forms of forest soils

Pedologist 25(2): 83-96

The physical fractions of the L, F and H layers and A horizons of 29 brown forest soils were examined for organic matter composition, humus composition, element composition and nitrogen transformation. Of the changes in elemental composition with decomposition and humification, those affecting C/N ratio were most noticeable. In the mineral horizons C/N ratios were lower in moderately moist soils than in dry soils. Inorganic N (NI) was present in most cases in the form of NH4-N.
