Humus nitrification patterns in the broadleaved evergreen Mediterranean zone

Humus was collected from soil under undisturbed communities of Erica verticullata, Arbutus unedo, Quercus coccifera and Pinus halepensis, growing on mica schists, flysch, hard limestone and calcareous tertiary deposits. In incubation experiments humus from soil supporting E. verticillata and acid humus from soils on mica schists showed no nitrification. In neutral humus under P. halepensis from flysch added NH4-N disappeared with no concomitant production of NO3-N. Humus of A. unedo, Q. coccifera and P. halepensis growing on hard limestone, flysch and calcareous tertiary deposits showed nitrification, but immobilization of inorganic N occurred in some samples of high C:N ratio.
