Despite large scale efforts to solve the problem, hunger has become increasingly widespread in the world since 1970. The situation must be seen in terms of the economic system rather than production, since the product of agricultural labour is channelled to the classes possessing the means of production. Shortly before World War II, third world countries were net exporters of cereals, the staples of world food production, but are now increasingly dependent on imports from the developed world.
