Husk leaves of early dent maize: breeding behaviour and contribution to grain yield

Four inbreds with high husk-leaf area and four with no husk leaves were crossed in a diallel. Differences in mean husk-leaf area of F1s and F2s between localities indicated that the environmental effects were important. Heterosis over the midparental value for husk-leaf area had an average of 254% at St. Paul and 169% at Rosemount, Minnesota, for the high X high husk-leaf area F1s. No significant heterosis was seen for the high X low and low X low crosses.
