Hybrid Ia antigens: identification, characterization and role in immune response

Hybrid Ia antigens: identification, characterization and role in immune response

Immunobiology of the major histocompatibility complex: 28-36

From a review of the literature on the mouse, it is proposed that there are 2 types of Ia specificity: (1) allotypic specificities, which are markers or determinants on either the alpha or beta chains, such as Ia.7 on the IE chain; (2) hybrid Ia specificities, which are generated as unique interaction gene products by specific association of alpha and beta chains producing specificities such as Ia.22 and Ia.23 of the IE molecule.
