Hybrid vigour for milk production in commercial dairy herds

Lactation records for Dairy Shorthorn (DS), Red and White Friesian (RF) and crosses between DS and RF in 106 commercial herds were used. Heterosis for milk, fat and protein yield in 1st lactation of RF X DS cows was estimated to be 6.3, 7.5 and 6.0% resp. Heterosis was estimated in back-crosses on the basis of an additive dominance model.
