Seven varieties carrying Mexican genes, including Kalyan Sona, and one of Indian origin, Agra Local, were included in a diallel cross without reciprocals. Parents and hybrids were evaluated for yield and six related characters at high and low soil fertility levels in 1971. Combinations showing pronounced heterosis in the F1 also showed marked inbreeding depression in the F2, indicating nonadditive gene action.
