Technical Bulletin, United States Department of Agriculture: 23-27

Crossing procedures for obtaining hybrids between Nicotiana species and for effecting introgressive transfer of particular traits from one species to another are reviewed. The induction of chromosome doubling by colchicine treatment of seeds or apices is suggested as a means of circumventing hybrid sterility, and a method for avoiding the problems associated with male sterility is presented. Techniques for artificial pollination and the germination of hybrid seeds are given.
