Induction of bulbing in onion by ethephon

Onions of several cvs were sown in the field in Florida on 10 September, 12 October, 18 November, 10 February and 1 March and ethephon was applied 1-3 times in the spring. The bulb index (bulb-to-stem diameter ratio) was increased in the September-sown crop by 3 applications of 1000 or 3000 p.p.m. ethephon, although individual bulb weights were reduced. Total marketable yields were also reduced at these ethephon concentrations and the incidence of rotten and cull bulbs increased.
