In a field trial in the wet season of 1978 soils were (a) left unirrigated, (b) saturated or (c) submerged for 15 days prior to sowing with rice Karjat 184 and Tuljapur 1 and then maintained at field capacity during crop growth in all treatments. Available N, P, Fe and Mn, and straw and grain yields increased with treatments (b) and (c) compared with (a). Av. grain yields were 2.61, 2.92 and 3.12 t/ha with (a), (b) and (c), resp.
